Hungerford's Colts wrapped up their year with a comfortable 45-5 win over Thatcham which leaves them top of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire (OBB) League 4 with three bonus point wins from three.
Thatcham brought plenty of intensity to this well-supported match at the Triangle Field and shocked their hosts by taking the lead in the fifth minute after a spell of constant pressure from the kick off.
Hungerford began to feel their way into the match and they drew level when No 8 Arthur Thomas raced clear to score wide out. Man of the match, inside centre Stan Doyle, added a second try before half time after a strong, penetrating run with Cam Heath adding the conversion – his first of five – to leave Hungerford 12-5 up at the break.
A strong group of finishers and some excellent running rugby helped Hungerford pull clear in the second half, with further tries from Thomas, Heath, Ollie Hamlin, Ollie Carroll and Roddy Goodenough.
Thatcham fought hard throughout and both sides did their best to produce some flowing rugby in a game punctuated by stoppages and with four yellow cards, and Hungerford will be wary of the threat from their opponents in the return league fixture early in the New Year.
