The club’s first Colts group for four seasons notched a 29-24 win over their visitors, scoring five tries along the way. Last season’s under-16s have made the jump and will be looking to consolidate their recent successes between now and April.
Sunday’s game was full of entertaining, open play and Hungerford opened the scoring through when Henry Wilson crossing in the corner, with Jesse White converting. Overton’s hard-fought response brought a try of their own before Hungerford notched two scores in quick succession. The first came from debutant scrum-half Cam Heath after a neat interchange with White and the second from Ollie Carroll. Hungerford’s forwards then got in on the act with a line out move finished strongly by prop Ethan Hawkins. Overton came back strongly in the second half, but Hungerford were able to close the game out through hooker Will Fishlock before a late Overton consolation score.
“It was a really good early season hit-out,” said Colts' head coach Dan Ward. “Both teams were obviously a bit rusty but there was some outstanding work and all the tries came from strong attacking lines and support play, which is a real focus for us. We responded well to Overton’s fightback to close out the game. The most satisfying thing is watching this group continue through the ranks from the early days of Minis through to Colts. The squad continues to grow which will hopefully enable us to carry a strong Colts squad into the next two seasons.”
